Master’s of Library & Information Science

School of Information

Zine collection at Long Beach Public Library, where I volunteer to help manage the collection and conduct programming around zines in the library.

This site details my competencies for the Master’s of Library Information Science (MLIS) program from San Jose State University.   I have tried to tell my unique story about my culminating MLIS experience in this e-portfolio. You will see I am very passionate about zine librarianship, intellectual freedoms and equal access to information especially through the lens of a critical librarian in a global environment. My professional perspective is to give equal access to all people in regards to information, resources, education and sustainability. You will see in my e-portfolio how I have studied information services to underrepresented populations such as incarcerated people.

Let me tell you about my prior education and background.  In August of 2002 I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University Fullerton in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations and a minor in Anthropology.   In 2016, I started working in an elementary school library as a Library Media Technician. This position at the school district really opened my eyes to helping students gain information, reading and literacy and also how good I was at working with technology to help students work while teachers integrated more and more technology into their curriculum.  This also coincided with California state testing going 100% online (no paper tests), where my role was to help make sure that all devices were ready for students to test on and troubleshoot along the way through the testing process.

In 2017 I applied to volunteer at Long Beach Public Library.  I began volunteering at one of the branches and still do to this day.  I have worked with patrons for the Summer Reading Program, zine workshops, teen programming, and other duties as needed.  It was while volunteering at the library and working at the school library when I decided I wanted to do more in the field of information.  This is when I decided to apply to grad school to become a librarian.

January 2018 I began my masters program at San Jose State University for Library and Information Science.  This e-portfolio outlines the competencies that I have achieved over my coursework through my MLIS program.  My graduation date is set for August 2020.
